As millennials age and become a prime target of generational marketing, many of the biggest names in the burgeoning streaming video industry are beginning to tap into 30-something childhood nostalgia. For one, Netflix has cranked out a series of ‘90s retro series lately, from animated adaptations like Castlevania and Carmen Sandiego to the Fuller House reboot. Now, Hulu has jumped aboard the millennial nostalgia train in a big way with their own announcement: Hulu is bringing back hit comedies from the iconic TGIF lineup of primetime ABC yesteryears.
Many of us in our thirties remember many Friday nights spent watching TGIF with our families and friends. Characters from those series became pop culture icons for years and launched the careers of many actors. Hulu made the announcement about bringing back TGIF in a press release issued today titled “TGI-HULU!” Hulu will begin streaming every episode of the classic AMC comedies Family Matters, Full House, Perfect Strangers, Step by Step, and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. The series were all part of ABC’s classic TGIF lineup, a block of prime time Friday night TV full of family-friendly and heartwarming comedies which ran from 1989 to 2000. Hulu’s acquisition of Full House has to sting Netflix, who reportedly vied for the series to run alongside its Fuller House reboot. In the end, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution decided it would be best to sell the rights to the series as a package to Hulu.
Hulu’s senior VP of content Craig Erwich issued a statement claiming he’s surprised viewers still crave these nostalgic but outdated series when there is such a wealth of original, groundbreaking content available for streaming:
It’s hard to believe we’re talking about Full House and Handmaid’s Tale in the same sentence — but these are stories that stand out and serve different needs. Sometimes people are in the mood for something that is very new and challenging, and sometimes people want something comfortable. Our job is to have the shows that feed those experiences.
Hulu’s new TGIF series Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Perfect Strangers and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper will be available for streaming on September 29.
